Exploration

From the perspective of a level designer, a map is more than just a tool for navigation—it's a canvas for storytelling and a promise of adventure. When we set out to build the Isle of Grianan, our guiding principle was simple: exploration must be rewarded. We didn't want to create a world where players simply run from one quest marker to the next. We wanted to build a world that invites you to get lost.

Discoveries like this are what make exploration meaningful.

The "Breadcrumb" Philosophy

How do you encourage players to wander off the beaten path? We use what we call a "breadcrumb" philosophy. A peculiarly shaped rock formation, an oddly out-of-place flower, a faint trail that isn't on any map—these are the small details we sprinkle throughout the world. They're subtle invitations to look closer.

Following these breadcrumbs might lead you to a hidden chest with rare crafting materials, or perhaps to a breathtaking vista perfect for a screenshot. But sometimes, they lead to something much more significant, like a secret grotto, a forgotten ruin, or even the lair of a unique creature that holds a piece of the island's history.

Crafting The Unmarked

The grotto pictured above is a perfect example. It's not part of any main quest. It exists for one reason: to be found. Crafting these unmarked locations is one of the most satisfying parts of our job. We get to build small, self-contained stories into the very rock of the world. Who used this grotto? What were they hiding from? The answers aren't spelled out; they're hinted at through environmental clues, leaving you, the player, to piece together the narrative.

Grianan is vast, and its secrets are many. We can't wait to see what you discover when you start your own journey into the mists. Happy exploring!
